Beside the main location in Irdning and the Moarhof (Institute for Organic Farming and Farm Animal Biodiversity, Teaching), which is situated in Puergg-Trautenfels, the Agricultural Research and Education Centre (AREC) Raumberg-Gumpenstein is in charge of two branches and four field offices.
The main location of the AREC is in Irdning, in the Upper Enns-Valley (Styria).
Agricultural Research and Education Centre Raumberg-Gumpenstein Raumberg 38 A-8952 Irdning Austria
Main Location Raumberg (School) and Gumpenstein (Research) with Moarhof
The location in Irdning is particularly characterized by its central location in the Alpine area. It is very favourably situated at the intersection of the Limestone- and the Central Alps, shows a rain gauge of about 1000 mm and a yearly average temperature of 7.2° C. Therefore it is representative for a large part of the Alpine area. The achieved results of the attempts can directly be transferred to and used at home and abroad, respectively.
Raumberg is a district of Irdning and the location of the school, 300m beeline from the research centre.
The community Irdning is situated in the Upper Enns-Valley. This region is well-known for its diverse possibilities for skiing and hiking holidays. In the North the region verges on the Salzkammergut, which is an internationally well-known place for tourists. Furthermore, you can get to famous places, as for example to Bad Aussee or Bad Ischl, by car whithin one hour.

Journey and und Accessibility
The destination is called Stainach-Irdning, which is about 6 km away from the AREC Raumberg-Gumpenstein (you will be able to be picked up there, if the information is received in advance). For a railway schedule please have a look at the website of the Austrian Railway Service (www.oebb.at).
Irdning and the AREC are situated in the centre of Austria, about 110 km north-western of Graz and about 130 km south-eastern of Salzburg. The most important traffic routes to Irdning and Puergg-Trautenfels (Moarhof) are the highway A10 to Radstadt and afterwards B320, the "Ennstaler-Bundesstrasse" (coming from Salzburg). Liezen is the next bigger city (about 10 km in the East).
If you are approaching from Graz or Linz, just take the highway A9 until the exit Liezen. Coming from Vienna it would be the best for you to go to Leoben (over the Semmering) and afterwards you use the highway A9 until the exit Liezen. From Liezen you follow the Ennstal-Bundesstrasse B320 (direction Salzburg) until Puergg-Trautenfels. At the area of Irdning you can follow the signs to reach the school as well as the research centre (direction Donnersbach).
Every airport has got connections to railway stations/trains.

The outposts Admont, Winklhof (Oberalm bei Hallein), Kobenz and Piber
For the collection of different soil- and climate conditions within Austria, the AREC disposes of 3 further outposts, that are constantly looked after and one outpost in Kobenz (Knittelfeld).
At the outpost Admont (Hoffeld) agricultural research activites have already been carried out since 1900. Since 1947 the test-area has been undertaken by the Federal Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry, Environment and Water Management. Since then grassland trials (permanent grassland, fertilization, intensity of usage, crop rotation attempts, lysimeterattempts...) have been implemented. The location in the Enns Valley, in the East of Liezen, on 640 m above sea level with an annual precipitation of 1.230 mm and an annual average temperature of 6.9 °C enables long-term studies on permanent grassland and the comparison of the attempt results with other attempt stations.
Test-areas of the outpost Admont
At the outpost Kobenz practical attempts (fertilization and application intensity, crop rotation attempts...) have been realized in collaboration with the agricultural technical college Kobenz in the context of research activities since 1998. Beside the attempts a botanical show garden with different sorts of corn, grasses and kinds of clover is arranged every year.
The location Murtal, close to Zeltweg, on 627 m above sea level, with an annual rainfall of 860 mm and an annual average temperature of 8.2 °C enables the comparison of the attempt results with other research stations.

At the outpost Piber practical attempts (seed mixtures in permanent grassland, fertilization and application intensity, crop rotation attempts...) have been realized in the context of research activities since 1961.
The location in Western Styria, close to Koeflach, on 450 m above sea level, with a rain gauge of 880 mm and an annual average temperature of 9.9 °C enables long-term studies on permanent grassland and the comparison of the attempt results with other research stations.
Test-areas of the outpost Piber
At the outpost Winklhof (Oberalm, Hallein) practical attempts (seed mixtures in permanent grassland, fertilization and application intensity, crop rotation attempts, lysimeterstations...) have been carried out in collaboration with the agricultural technical college Winklhof in the context of research activities since 1998. Beside the attempts a botanical show garden with different kinds of corn, grasses and clover is arranged every year.
The location at the Northern edge of the Alps, close to Salzburg, with a rain gauge of about 1,450 mm and an annual average temperature of 9.1° C, enables a comparison of the achieved results with both the inner-alpine and the other outposts.
