The aim of this project is to quantify the total dissolved nitrogen and carbon in seepage water from grassland and arable land under the conditions of different fertilizers (slurry, farm yard manure compost). With the help of field trials and lysimeters (monolithic lysimeters, seepage water collectors) the total leaching of nitrogen and carbon will be determined.

The importance of different forms of nitrogen (NO3-N, NH4-N, organic N) for total nitrogen leaching in different agricultural ecosystems and the potential of denitrification in the seepage water will be investigated. Seasonal influences as well as influences of different forms of fertilizers and crop plants on total nitrogen and carbon leaching will also be determined. This project creates basics for the protection of groundwater, and aims to minimize groundwater pollution by nitrogen leaching.
